The situation differs depending on when you moved to the United Kingdom.
- The person was already settled in the United Kingdom before the end of the transition period (December 31, 2020):
In that case, if the person has taken the necessary steps to obtain a settled or pre settled status before June 30, 2021, no visa is required.
- The person has moved to the United Kingdom after the transition period (after December 31, 2021) or wishes to move to the UK:
Since January 1, 2021, a visa is, in most cases, required to work in the United Kingdom.
The type of visa differs depending on:
- The duration of the contract;
- The area of employment;
- The nature of the job; and
- The applicant’s level of qualification.
Generally, to obtain a work visa, the applicant must:
- Be employed in an eligible job;
- Have a confirmed offer of employment from an employer approved by the British government;
- Being paid a minimum salary (how much depends on the type of work); and
- Demonstrate English language proficiency.
At first, the process is done online (on the British government website).
However, it is then possible to be summoned in a visa center.
There are fees for this procedure.
- The applicant is planning to work in the United Kingdom for 6 months or less:
A visa is not required if the applicant is either:
- Visiting for some business and academic activities; or
- Invited as an expert in them profession.
However, if the applicant wants to do paid work, in the United Kingdom, a visa is required.
- The applicant is planning to work in the United Kingdom for longer than 6 months:
In that case, a visa is required.
The type of visa, the eligibility requirements and the visa duration differ according to types of job.
The fields are as follows:
- Health and care professional;
- Digital technology professional;
- Academic or researcher;
- Work in arts or culture;
- Professional sportsperson;
- Religious worker;
- The applicant wants to start a business; and
- Another type of job.
The visa allows the applicant to stay in the country from 1 to 5 years, some of them are extendible.
Sometimes, it is also possible, after a certain period, to be eligible to apply to settle in the United Kingdom.
