Working in the United Kingdom

The situation differs depending on when you moved to the United Kingdom.

  • The person was already settled in the United Kingdom before the end of the transition period (December 31, 2020):

In that case, if the person has taken the necessary steps to obtain a settled or pre settled status before June 30, 2021, no visa is required.

  • The person has moved to the United Kingdom after the transition period (after December 31, 2021) or wishes to move to the UK:

Since January 1, 2021, a visa is, in most cases, required to work in the United Kingdom.

The type of visa differs depending on:

  • The duration of the contract;

Generally, to obtain a work visa, the applicant must:

  • Have a confirmed offer of employment from an employer approved by the British government;
  • Being paid a minimum salary (how much depends on the type of work); and
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency.

At first, the process is done online (on the British government website).

However, it is then possible to be summoned in a visa center.

There are fees for this procedure.

  1. The applicant is planning to work in the United Kingdom for 6 months or less:

A visa is not required if the applicant is either:

  • Visiting for some business and academic activities; or
  • Invited as an expert in them profession.

However, if the applicant wants to do paid work, in the United Kingdom, a visa is required.

  1. The applicant is planning to work in the United Kingdom for longer than 6 months:

In that case, a visa is required.

The type of visa, the eligibility requirements and the visa duration differ according to types of job.

The fields are as follows:

  • Digital technology professional;
  • Academic or researcher;
  • Work in arts or culture;
